Welcome to Open Heart Mindfulness Community

Open Heart Mindfulness Community is a peer-led meditation group that follows the Vipassana tradition. The teachings provide a message of awareness, freedom, wisdom and compassion that help one open to personal insight. Our intention is to provide a safe and welcoming environment where these teachings can be heard and practiced.

Open Heart welcomes all, including those new to meditation.

Open Heart was established in 2010 evolving from Northwoods Mindfulness Community. Northwoods was established by Beverly Yates and Jim Bean in 1996 and was located at St. Joseph’s Health Centre from 2002 – 2009. 


About Us

We meet from 7pm - 9pm every Wednesday evening. There is a 45 minute guided sitting meditation (part guided, part silent) followed by a short break and then a recorded dharma talk or video from a variety of respected teachers. On the last Wednesday of the month there is always a social after the meditation where we share mindful conversation and treats. We meet in Classroom 5 on the Main Floor in the Sunnyside building at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.  For more information go to Location & Directions.


We ask first-timers to arrive by 6:45 for a brief welcome and orientation.
